“We didn’t want to wait…”

…that it is too late” – Sarah’s story, a choice of life rather than routine .

When Sarah and her family decided to break free from the vicious cycle of work, obligations, and daily life to move to southern Spain last summer, many thought they were crazy. Why leave behind stable jobs, a well-organized life, and a predetermined future? But for Sarah, this choice stemmed from a profound realization—the kind of realization too many people only have when it's already too late.

Doris: Sarah, what prompted you to take the plunge and move to Spain?

Sarah: It was a series of warning signs. A friend's uncle had just retired, ready to finally enjoy life after decades of hard work—and in less than a year, he was gone. A client told me the same thing about her mother. Over and over again, I heard the same story: people who spend their lives waiting for "one day ," only to have their dream shattered by a twist of fate—cancer, a heart attack, something unexpected.

And I thought to myself: What if we never get to that "one day"? That's when we understood — we couldn't wait any longer.

Doris: That's a powerful realization. How did you change your mindset?

Sarah: It didn't happen overnight. For years, we followed the classic pattern: work hard, save, and only later, once retired, start to really live. But we began to ask ourselves some essential questions:

  • What does the life we dream of really look like?
  • Can we experience part of it right now, instead of waiting years?

At first, we thought: One day, we'll take a long vacation, we'll spend more time with our friends. But then we asked ourselves — Why wait? Rather than postponing our happiness, we sought to introduce it immediately into our daily lives.

We questioned everything: our jobs, our homes, our lifestyles. Could we work remotely? Change direction? Take back control of our time and give ourselves, right now, the life we dreamed of?

Doris: Many dream of doing what you do but feel stuck. What would you say to them?

Sarah: I would tell them this: Life doesn't wait for you. It's lived now . If you aspire to more joy, more freedom, more shared moments, why not start right now?

Not everyone can pack their bags and move to Spain overnight. But we can all take small steps. Work remotely, spend more time with loved ones, learn to slow down.

Because in the end, it's the small, everyday decisions that shape the life we create.

Sarah and I became friends after I had the privilege of helping her family find their little piece of paradise in Andalusia—an adventure for which I am deeply grateful. Our conversations come alive during long walks on the beach or bike rides through the wild landscapes of La Alcaidesa, where time seems to stand still. And with each encounter, I leave feeling energized, reminded of how essential it is to savor the present moment. Because ultimately, it's not just the big milestones that define us, but rather those simple, everyday moments that quietly shape the lives we build.
